Alternator Repair FAQs
What does my alternator do?
Your alternator is a major part of your car’s charging system, producing electricity and converting alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). There are three different components: the alternator, a voltage regulator, and a battery, working to provide sufficient electrical energy to the battery to recharge.
Each alternator is carefully configured for each car’s electrical system requirements such as the intensity and charging level. But if problems occur, it can result in the car battery overcharging or undercharging, which are the leading causes of car battery overheating.
The alternator, along with the battery, generates electric power, which is used by parts of the electrical system such as the instrument panel, exterior and interior lights. An alternator typically has a full output rated at 6000 rpm, and won’t generate significant voltage until the speed is about 2000 rpm or more.

Can I still start my car with a faulty alternator?
Yes, it’s still possible to start your car with a faulty alternator. To do so, you need to use the charge of another vehicle using a set of jumper cables.
Make sure both cars are turned off first and follow these steps:
- Connect the red (positive) cable to the positive terminal of the car with the faulty alternator.
- Then do the same with the other red cable on the car with the charged battery.
- Next, connect the negative (black) cable to the to the negative terminal of car with the good battery .
- Then connect the other black jumper cable anywhere on the engine of the car with the bad battery. This will act as a ground.
- Start the engine of the car with the charged battery and your car should receive enough charge to start your engine and drive.
